A Japanese mobile website recently held a poll asking the public to vote for the most “God-like” rapper.

Thanks to his Japanese fans, Big Bang’s very own G-Dragon ranked in at number 4, while rap superstar Eminem ranked in at number 5, thus showing the popularity of Big Bang in Japan.

Meanwhile, the honor of the top rank went to Japanese underground rapper AK-69, while 2nd place went to Kreva, who is known for his rap performances.

Fans who saw the list, commented, “G-Dragon is popular even in Japan” and “I am proud of him. I hope he continues to spread the name of Korea“.

KARA and JYJ: “Slavery” or “Betrayal”?

With the recent news of KARA’s contract negotiations, and JYJ’s “Music Essay” reaching #1, the debate between management companies and artists has once again become a hot topic, and this time both sides are speaking out.

Featured in a segment called, “JYJ and KARA, why did they do it?”, on MBC’s “News Magazine 2580” (시사매거진 2580), representatives from both sides spoke out, and Junsu and Yoochun themselves discussed their controversial decision and artists’ rights.

For one of the first times, Park Yoochun confessed that he fully knew that he “might never be able to be a star again” when he decided to leave SM Entertainment, but even with this realization, he still needed to “find happiness and leave.”

Kim Junsu, Kim Jaejoong, and Park Yoochun left their band, DBSK, and management group, SM Entertainment, in July of 2009, citing differences in regards to the length and terms of contract. The best known of these claims is SM Entertainment’s lack of transparency regarding group finances, and that the 13 year term of contract was far too long. However, the boys’ decision to leave and regroup as JYJ has not been a walk in the park, especially with them facing an unstated ban from popular music programs (SBS Inkigayo, MBC Music Core, and KBS Music Bank all declined to give statements or explanations).

Regarding this, Junsu said, “I think that it is very weird that we cannot appear on broadcast television. I learned that it truly is difficult for a Korean singer to perform on a stage, and it is what I resent most.”

Fast forward to almost a year and a half later, and three members of KARA: Jung Nicole, Han Seungyeon, and Kang Jiyoung, have moved to terminate their contract with their management group, DSP. The group also cites lack of transparency and suspected mishandling of group finances – especially regarding the money they raised and earned through overseas promotions and activities in Japan.

On the flipside, the show also did the footwork and found that a management company invests an average $1,800 per person per month during the artists’ training years. Covering everything from food and housing to lessons, promotional fees, and spending money, costs can accrue during the process that could last anywhere from six months to three years. The segment also cites that one popular seven member girl group incurred 2.9 billion won in training fees alone over the course of four years.

In defense of the industry, a representative from Core Contents Media (the management company of groups T-ara, Davichi, and 5Dolls) said, “Management companies have to blindly and continuously invest money… Most people underestimate how much money we pour into our artists, and overestimate how much they make when in the market. We do what we can, but this is the way it works.”

With netizens lining up and crying “slavery” or “betrayal”, and with passions still running high, we hope that for the sake of the fans, this battle between artists’ rights and management costs will somehow find a resolution soon.

Super Junior wants the world to see Super Show 4

The Super Junior members were in Singapore this past weekend for the Singapore leg of their Super Show 3 concert tour and it finished off successfully with 20,000 fans going home delighted.

Before the second concert in Singapore yesterday, the members had a press conference with the local media where they expressed their desire to bring the next edition, Super Show 4, to cities outside of Asia. Since the beginning of their Super Show concert tour begun back in 2008, the extravaganza has been confined to mainly east and southeastern countries in Asia.

The prolific group has plans to bring a brand new Super Show 4 showcase to the rest of the world after the release of their fifth album this year“, so says band leader Leeteuk, 27, when asked to share the group’s plans and goals for 2011.

We won’t restrict it [Super Show 4] to only Asia“, he smilingly adds, during an interview with Xin MSN yesterday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Leeteuk and Heechul were also asked about the minor accident they got into. “As long as my fans are fine, we are fine,” Heechul coolly replied, grinning from ear to ear. Leeteuk chimed in, “In the future, for security reasons, we want fans to be careful and take care of themselves too.”

The Super Junior boys will regroup again next month for the Japan leg of their Super Show 3 concert tour from February 18 – 20th, and they will also head to the Philippines, Taiwan, and Malaysia in the coming months before ending in Vietnam on May 7th.

Super Junior listed in "Goodwill & MGI upcoming songs to be released in 2011"

Although we’ve heard no official news from SM Entertainment regarding Super Junior’s return to the music stage, a little net browsing by one of allkpop’s readers has revealed some details suggesting a comeback this year with an album.

The name GoodWill & MGI may not ring any bells for the average kpop fan, but the American-Finnish producing/songwriting duo makes up the brains behind numerous hit tracks in the United States and Europe.

Having opened their official website earlier this month, GoodWill & MGI’s discography page brags an impressive list of successful productions, as well as a section of upcoming songs to be released in 2011. Aside from a line-up of tracks for Justin Bieber (“Latin Girl”), Sean Kingston (“Wake Up the Neighbors,” “GO”), Lazee (“All That She Wants”) plus a collab between Akon, Timbaland & Pitbull(“Boomerang”), the selected discography page also lists Super Junior with a track titled, “Gotcha Numba.” Excited?

Interestingly enough, the German artist Jimi Blue is also listed right below Super Junior with a track of the same title, so there is a possibility that the songright was sold to both SM Entertainment and Universal Germany.

Remember that none of this information has been confirmed by SME, so stay tuned to allkpop for further details!

[Interview] Kyuhyun's Interview with his Church Newspaper

Super Junior's maknae Kyuhyun whose group is enjoying the biggest popularity in Korea as well as Asia is an idol star that warms your heart. Super Junior made Asia wild through their hit songs like Don't Don and Sorry Sorry. Aside from being part of the big title Super Junior, he recently showed off his new side with Super Junior-M and S.M. The Ballad and received big popularity in Japan, Taiwan, China and other countries.

Kyuhyun also became a new rising newcomer in musicals with his superb acting of D'Artagnan in the musical The Three Musketeers. Even though it was his first musical, the musical industry took notice of his remarkable singing talent, ability to lead the story and his natural acting skills.

The supportive fans sent rice instead of wreaths to Choongmo Art Hall where the musical performances are held. It was touching as the star and his fans' heartwarming thoughts were conveyed to the less unfortunate who have to spend the cold winter alone. Kyuhyun said on January 25th that he will be sending over 2000 kilograms of rice to Yeouido Gospel Seongbuk church which he attends.

Kyuhyun, a born believer of Yeouido Gospel Seongbuk church developed his belief by attending the church's preschool and kindergarten. Since he was a child, he volunteered by playing the violin in the ensemble class and when he was in middle school, he played the clarinet. When the church was divided to multiple places, he continued his life as a believer in Yeouido Gospel Seongbuk church.

Kyuhyun's mother Deacon Kim Hannah has worked as the leader of a region for over 20 years and has been volunteering in the church choir for 18 years. Kyuhyun who grew up under his mother's prayers won an award in the bible memorization competition as a young child. He also won an award for his missionary work and diligently attended the church. He is a model student who works hard to spread God's word and always prays diligently at Sunday masses.

"Even when I'm busy doing overseas schedule, I have a quite time in my spare time. My mind becomes at ease when I read God's words and meditate. If I can't go to church for some reason, the whole week gets hard for me. I always try to attend Sunday mass because bad things happen and I get dissatisfied with myself if I don't attend mass."

Kyuhyun enjoyed big popularity as the vocal of his school band when he attended YeomKwang high school. When he was a 3rd grader in high school, he won a gold medal in 2005 Buddy Contest and also won a bronze medal in Chin Chin Young Adult Gayo Festival, receiving much interest from music producers. When Kyuhyun graduated high school, he was a member of the church's Praise Ministry team for a short while. That year, Kyuhyun who is handsome, has great singing skills and is composed unlike his young age contracted with SM Entertainment and joined Super Junior as the maknae in 2006.

When he was garnering popularity, a completely surprising event occurred in April of 2007. When he and other Super junior members were going home after recording KBS 2FM Super Junior's Kiss the Radio, the van that they were rode on rolled over. Kyuhyun fell 200 meters down as a result, breaking his ribs and pelvic bones. When his ribs broke, it also caused damage to his lung.

When the accident occurred, Kyuhyun knelt down on his knees and called God. He confessed, "God, I was wrong. Forgive me. Thank you God" and lost consciousness afterward. He confessed the first thing that came into his mind was that he neglected God because he was busy with his schedule.

When Kyuhyun's fans and his family heard about the accident, they attended morning mass and started their planned prayers. The fans' encouragement and prayers were a big strength to Kyuhyun.

On the fifth month of receiving treatment, Kyuhyun participated in Super Junior's second album even though he had not fully recovered. Many fans sent applause to Kyuhyun who survived his moment of death and stood on stage once again.

Afterward, he received treatment for two more months and became his usual healthy self again. "The three months when I had to lie in the hospital bed was a difficult time. But I leaned on God and it became a time for me to be more thankful to God. I listened to Pastor Cho Yonggi's sermon and had quite times. It was an opportunity for me to be closer to God."

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Kyuhyun who does well in whatever he does has confidence that God will always be with him. He prays for 5 minutes when he has to go on stage for a musical, a concert or a program. "I think that I'm not afraid of anything on stage when God is with me. I pray that he be with me until the end and also pray that my members don't get hurt and stay health."

He does not forget to read the bible even in his busy schedule. "I read the holy bible. Even though all the words are benevolent, his words, 'you are the salt of the earth, light of the world' gives me the most strength."

Kyuhyun who is always filling his positive mind with his dreams and visions revealed that he wants to live a life where he gives back his glory to God. "Along with Super Junior activities, I'm doing several individual acitivities. I want to challenge myself to try different fields starting with the musical. I want to become a person who has influence so that I can spread God's word. Also, I pray for young adults to believe and feel that God is always with them."

Kara Controversy still continue...

The parents of KARA’s Nicole, Jiyoung, and Seungyeon held a press conference with their lawyers, Landmark, at 3 PM KST on January 20th. The members were not present.

The parents began by declaring that they wanted “a KARA of five members” and that the members genuinely wanted “a KARA of five members” as well. Although there are legal issues between the members and their agency, the parents were adamant about making clear that the members wanted to continue as a group.

The parents stated, “The priority right now are KARA’s promotions. The agency itself is the next problem. The basic job of a management agency is to support an artist’s activities. An artist is not subordinate to the company.

Representatives of the three members of KARA stated, “We want the full support of a management company that will allow KARA to express their full potential. The very foundation of an entertainment management company is trust and professionalism. The kind of relationship the members want with their company is one of trust and cooperation. We’ve reported many times that the company lacks both elements.

They continued, “This controversy is a problem between the members and their agency, not one between each other. There is no discord between the members, but DSP Media continues to contact each of the members in an effort to divide them. We genuinely hope that they will act with character for the members.

When asked about the possibility of the girls returning to DSP, Hong replied, “There is a possibility, but like we’ve said numerous times, it’s only possible once the problems as revealed by the members and their parents are fixed. ”

On Hara’s decision to cancel her termination, he replied, “From what I know, she has a strong attachment to the five and wanted teamwork.

A reporter asked, “What do you have to say about your previous claim of the members receiving 1% of their income?” Hong replied, “I do not have the exact documents so I cannot verify that for you.”

Another asked, “What do you think about the public believing Nicole’s mother is the cause of all this?“ Hong replied, “Not only Nicole’s mother, but the rest of their parents could not find a compromise with DSP, which is why they sought legal help.

When asked for further details on the “lack of professionalism” he mentioned earlier, Hong repied, “Details will be released later. I believe the fact that the situation has even reached this point is a big error on their end.

Core Contents CEO wants the Kara members gone?

The recent Kara controversy has many people upset, not only the fans but also many people who work in the industry. Mr. Kim Kwang Soo, the CEO of Core Contents Media who produced many famous groups such as T-ara, Seeya, Jo Sungmo, and SG Wannabe, raised his voice of concern much higher than others; he wants Seungyeon, Nicole and Jiyoung out of the industry… permanently.

In a phone interview with Daily Sports, he stated, “I asked the Korean Entertainment Producers Association (KEPA) to take heavy measures against Kara. I believe that if the three members left the group to join another management company, then they should not be allowed to come back to music industry in the future. All 300 members of the association must stop the three members from breaking Kara up.”

He continued, “It must have taken a great deal of the company’s passion and love to get the group up to their current level, and it breaks my heart to see it all crumbled overnight. If the quality of management was the problem, then they should get back with the company and solve it through discussions. They could also ask KEPA to intervene. Simply leaving the group like they did doesn’t solve any problems, it just creates more.”

He finished by saying, “Many artists and producers that were seniors to them spent a lot of time and effort to create a market for Korean music in Japan. Kara made all those efforts by them turn into nothing by carelessly stopping their Japanese promotions. The members must have gone through a tough time, there is no doubt; but I still hope that they would first go back to the company and then solve the problem.”

Mr. Kim is a big name in the Korean music industry, and seeing him speak out at this level shows that the management companies are quite upset, and at the same time, nervous about this fiasco. This must especially be the case as this is the second time that a major idol group has gone through something like this recently. Perhaps the CEOs want to set an example to other idol members who dream of such rebellion… but at the cost of DSP’s most valuable group.

Is Kara's Gyuri and Hara can cajole the other member?

It seems that KARA is still bent on staying together, as it’s being reported that Hara and Gyuri are attempting to convince the other members to return to DSP Media. The two have apparently expressed, “Our team cannot break up.”

A representative stated, “Hara and Gyuri both contacted the other members and told them that the team could/should not break up. [If we do], we’ll all fail together. I believe they’re trying to convince the other members by stressing the importance of staying as a group.”

A staff member of DSP stated, “If one member moves agencies, it’s highly likely that the others will reset contracts as well. They’re continuing to explain the misunderstandings.”

[NEWS] DSP Media releases official statement!

After the four members of KARA previously announced that they filed to terminate their contracts with DSP Media, representatives of the agency have finally released an official statement on January 19th.

It reads:

DSP Media will be making an official statement regarding the contract terminations reported by Jung Nicole, Han Seungyeon, Kang Jiyoung, and Goo Hara of KARA. We received a one-sided declaration from their lawyers, Landmark, on January 18th, but Goo Hara has decided not to join the others in terminating her contract.

According to their claims, the 10-month hospitalization of CEO Lee Hoyeon caused the management to become inefficient in planning and promoting the group’s activities, but that is not the truth, as the CEO’s wife ran administration in place of the CEO. KARA’s explosive popularity with the Hallyu wave in Japan testifies to these efforts, further proving that the management did not mishandle their activities.

CEO Lee Hoyeon was not able to run the company himself beginning March of 2010, and KARA’s Japanese achievements were made five months later in August. DSP Media has done all they can in supporting and preparing KARA’s Japanese advancement.

Regarding the income distribution claims made by Nicole’s mother and their lawyers, the information they revealed was distorted and is a complete misunderstanding. Income was distributed in a manner that was most profitable to the KARA members, and unlike what they claimed, every employee was paid at the same time the moment profits were received.

They also claimed that DSP Media used its stature to force unwanted schedules and activities, but this is also a baseless claim. This is a claim that only defames the company employees who have worked their hardest to raise KARA as one of Korea’s top groups and leaders of the Hallyu wave.

And regarding speculations from another report about a competing agency attempting to persuade their parents and lawyers to terminate the girls’ contract with DSP, we ask that they stop such actions immediately. Should such requests be made repeatedly, we will make sure that they are met with legal consequences.

As the company that has poured their sweat and effort into creating who KARA is today, we hope that such issues are no longer exaggerated. Should there be issues between both parties, adjustments and reconciliation should be the appropriate step in continuing to promote themselves as a representative girl group of Korea.”

Regarding news of Hara staying with DSP Media, representatives continued, “Hara has decided not to comply with the terminations.” The possibility of further changes in the remaining three contracts is now at center stage.

JYJ makes appearance on SBS "Good Morning"

After numerous delays, JYJ’s segment on SBS’s talk show, “Good Morning,” finally aired on January 19th. Fans got to see the boys discuss their recent activities, and even divulge some fun facts about each other while on the show.

Yoochun and Junsu opened up their segment by talking about Jaejoongs tears after JYJ completed their first Korean concert. “Jaejoong has a lot of tears. Whenever he cries, there’s no end; it’s as if a faucet was turned on!

When asked to choose the team’s strongest member, Jaejoong chose Junsu and reasoned, “He’s strong, but also level-headed. He tries to see only the positive things, and quickly forgets the bad things. He’s the type that wants to advance forward.”

Moving onto Yoochun, Jaejoong continued, “Yoochun is a very honest person, so he expresses how he feels very well. Since Junsu only thinks of positive things, it’s up to me to handle the negative.

Yoochun replied, “Since Jaejoong-hyung is the oldest, he tries to handle the stressful things on his own. As for me, whenever something sad comes up, I try to embrace it, even if it’s upsetting. I am pretty expressive of my emotions.” To the amusement of the studio, he added, “Jaejoong relieves his stress by drinking.

Jaejoong clarified, “I’m always worried about things since I have to prepare ourselves for the negative. While trying to find ways to relieve the stress, I realized that there’s nothing better than alcohol.

The members ended their segment with their thoughts on becoming seniors in the industry. Junsu concluded, “There are a lot of idol groups with members who were born in 1990. It feels weird being seniors. ” Yoochun added, “At the time of our debut, we were the youngest teens in the industry. Our seniors would call us ‘baby’ and such, but now we’ve become the seniors.”

[Continue] Kara's Gyuri to attend schedule as planned

After making it clear that the four members would not be searching for a compromise with DSP Media, Hong Myungho of Landmark revealed that they will also not be complying with any future activities scheduled by DSP Media.

In an interview with Star News on January 19th, Hong revealed, “Seungyeon, Nicole, Hara, and Jiyoung will not be attending any new activities scheduled by DSP Media.”

He continued, “The reason they formally filed to terminate their contracts was to put an end to their pending schedules. Before we officially begin the steps for their lawsuit, we will find a way to reach an agreement on fulfilling activities scheduled prior to the announcement. There is absolutely no possibility for the girls to reach a compromise with DSP Media. Problems have been stacked for too long, and they are absolute with their positions.”

KARA’s Japanese drama, “URAKARA,” is expected to have the most impact with recent developments, as the future of the show will depend on the agreement reached by both parties.

Leader Gyuri, who is not a part of the lawsuit, will continue with her schedules as planned. She will be appearing on MBC’s “Shimshimtapa” with Super Junior’s Shindong tonight as scheduled.

[Continue] Details Kara's Contract uncovers by TV Report!

Further details regarding KARA’s decision to terminate their exclusive contracts with DSP Media have been revealed through TV Report, Park Gyuri’s mother, and representatives of DSP Media.

TV Report claimed that industry representatives were aware of the issues surrounding KARA and their agency since December 2010. Representatives of DSP Media and Park Gyuri allege that the reason for the four members’ terminations was “eventually because of money.”

According to another industry representative, KARA brought in a total of $18 million USD in income from their Japanese promotions, but as of December 2010, the group was only paid $3,000 USD per person.

The members were also only paid for album sales for August and September of 2010, excluding CF and event appearances. The girls are said to have been paid in a greater amount for their activities aside from album and digital sales, which are all going to be paid without problems. The reason the girls are paid less for their album sales is said to be because of specific clauses in DSP’s contract with their Japanese distribution company.

Income made from the girls’ Japanese albums are calculated three months after its initial release, and 85% of the profits go to the distribution company, leaving DSP with the remaining 15%. The representative mentioned that the numbers are similar for any Korean artist advancing into the Japanese market.

Especially with DSP Media’s CEO, Lee Hoyeon, currently hospitalized, all artists under the agency were ordered to be kept under tight control. Around this time, another entertainment agency approached KARA and offered them to join their agency. The agency went as far as to offer to pay the penalties the girls would have to deal with for breaching their contracts should they take the offer.

The representative was said to have met with one of the members’ mothers to present a contract with fairer terms and a promotion plan that would instantly earn KARA enough fame to rival that of SNSD’s popularity.

The representative first met with Gyuri’s mother, but discussions did not run smoothly. In an interview with TV Report, her mother stated, “I could not betray DSP, who worked their hardest in creating who KARA is now. I have no problems with the contracts, and I trust DSP.”

Representatives of DSP further added, “There were mothers that brought up problems, so we made sure to make all related documents as transparent as possible to them. We used accountants that they chose, but in the end, they could not trust even that.

Another representative also revealed that DSP Media met with KARA’s mothers on January 18th and almost reached a compromise to reform the income distribution regarding their Japanese albums. The next day, KARA’s lawyers from Landmark announced their contract terminations.

Is there a possibility for them to reach a compromise? The industry is already speculating them to be the ’second TVXQ‘ due to the complex underlying issues.

There are definitely various problems with both parties, but the ultimate issue is the competition in trying to scout KARA, and money. The reality of these disputes with TVXQ and KARA is quite disappointing,” said one representative.

DSP Media has reasoned that they have no option left but to take legal action, predicting yet another legal battle in the industry.
